Specialised, clinical therapy for young people who self-harm
Speek uses Dialectical Behavioural Therapy for Adolescents (DBT-A). This is a type of therapy that helps young people manage their emotions and handle distress. It’s considered the gold standard care for clinical self-harm treatment, and is recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE).
Why DBT-A works
DBT-A is proven effective at reducing self-harm long term. It helps young people develop core skills like decreasing impulsive reactions and improving relationships. Clinical studies show that DBT-A greatly improves outcomes for young people when compared with traditional therapy, including:
- Decreased self-harm: Sharp drops in self-harm right away, including 50-60% less hospital visits
- Fewer suicide attempts: No attempts during treatment or at one-year follow-up
- Fewer side effects: No adverse effects that can happen with medication
- Long lasting benefits: Reduced frequency of self-harm after 3 years
“The importance of emotional validation blew my mind. I am aware I should have already known this but I wasn’t raised that way. I also learned to accept the situation more and my anxiety has decreased. I find I can be more present with her now”
